Mission & History

MISSION

Transport Group is a not-for-profit, off-Broadway theatre company in New York City that stages new works and re-imagines revivals by American writers. Our visually progressive productions of emotionally classic stories explore the challenges of relationships and identity in modern America.

HISTORY

Founded in 2001 by Jack Cummings III and Robyn Hussa, Transport Group has produced nineteen shows comprised of eleven new works and eight revivals, including nine plays and ten musicals. In addition to our primary focus – the presentation of mainstage productions – we also produce readings, developmental labs, concerts, and other special events.

For Transport Group’s first eight seasons, the company was in residence at The Connelly Theatre, a turn-of-the century proscenium theatre located in the East Village. Beginning with the 2009 – 2010 season, TG moved into a phase of environmental staging, performing works in non-traditional spaces such as a penthouse, a commercial loft, and a gym. Starting with the 2012 – 2013 season, Transport Group will be in residence at The Duke on 42nd Street where it has been building an audience over the previous two summers, having performed there in 2010 and 2011.

Currently headed by Jack Cummings III (Artistic Director) and Lori Fineman (Executive Director), Transport Group’s 2010 - 2011 season marked the company’s tenth anniversary season and a number of exciting artistic accomplishments: the first New York revival of Michael John LaChiusa’s Hello Again, which received critical acclaim and the Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Musical Revival, and the New York premiere of Douglas Carter Beane and Lewis Flinn’s musical Lysistrata Jones, which transferred to Broadway in the fall of 2011. Our eleventh season (2011 – 2012) included the critically acclaimed, first New York revival of Barry Conners’ The Patsy, re-invented and re-imagined as a remarkable one-man tour-de-force starring David Greenspan, and Transport Group’s first commission for The 20th Century Project, the world premiere of Michael John LaChiusa’s musical Queen of the Mist, starring Mary Testa.
