Every year TRANSPORT GROUP holds its major fundraising gala, entitled Gimme A Break. At Gimme a Break, Broadway stars tell the stories and sing the songs that made them famous.
This year’s Gimme A Break honored Barbara Heller Freitag, Broadway producer, and Michael Patrick King, the writer, producer, and director of HBO's Sex and the City. The host was Broadway and television star, Julie Halston.

TRANSPORT GROUP Humanitarian Award:
Since 2004, TRANSPORT GROUP has honored a person in the theatrical community who has demonstrated true generosity for the advancement of live theatre. Past recipients include Dr. Barry Kohn (Founder of Physician Volunteers for the Arts which provides free healthcare for those in the entertainment industry), Ted Shen (composer and philanthropist who has provided major support for modern composers for the musical theatre), and Gilbert Parker (legendary theatrical agent who brought into production major plays and musicals of the American theatre).
This year, TRANSPORT GROUP is proud to honor Barbara Heller Freitag and Michael Patrick King.
Barbara Heller Freitag has served on the Board of Directors of TRANSPORT GROUP since the company's inception in 2001, and recently pioneered The First 100, a group of donors who have made a significant multi-year commitment to TRANSPORT GROUP. As a foundng member of the Board of Directors, she has been instrumental in the development of the company's productions and events. Ms. Freitag's Broadway production credits include Butley (with Nathan Lane), Legally Blonde (2007 Drama Desk nominee), and The Drowsy Chaperone (winner of 5 Tony Awards and the 2006 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Muscial).
Michael Patrick King is best known as the 3-time Emmy Award-winning director, producer, and writer for the HBO series Sex and the City. He was also the creaor, director, and writer for the HBO series The Comeback, starring Lisa Kudrow, for which he received an Emmy nomination. Other television credits include Murphy Brown (Emmy nomination), Will and Grace, and Cybill. Mr. King started his career in New York as a playwright and standup comic. His short plays have been produced in New York, Los Angeles, and at the HBO Aspen Comedy Festival. He served as the artistic director of "arcade...a performance space," which he founded in LA, dedicated to launching new and exciting work. TRANSPORT GROUP will produce a new musical Marcy in the Galaxy, co-written by Mr. King and Nancy Shayne in the spring of 2008.
